Aimo Tukiainen: Evacuee Children

It reminds me of two brothers. Maybe they are exhausted from playing outside.


I see a father and a son/daughter. The child fell asleep on his lap while he was stroking his/her hair – you see the hand still there, maybe trying to calm or sooth the child. I see this relation where they are both dependent on each other. There is no mother in the picture, so maybe this is a sad situation where they really need each other.

I see homeless people, and they never know what will happen tomorrow. They are afraid and trying to be close to each other.

I see a girl and her brother, with only a small age difference. I don’t see any shoes. Maybe their parents went through some tragic event and can’t take care of them. I don’t think they are poor. The material used is very dark which leads me to think that it’s a sad event. It also looks like the young girl has been crying. But in general it’s not very detailed.

It reminds me of the story of Hansel and Gretel who were lost in the forest.
